Summary:
The Blue Heron Insomnia program packages up a known science-backed method for falling asleep for those who don’t want to dig up this information and material on their own. It combines a written training with an accompanying sound track that teaches you how to train your brain to fall asleep.
If you are anything like me, there is a genuine possibility that at some point in your life you have suffered from an inability to fall asleep. While this can be described chronically as insomnia, it is something that afflicts most of the population at one time or another.
Now while some people may not consider this to be a huge deal, I should reiterate that getting good quality sleep every night is extremely important.
In fact, a single night of poor sleep has been shown to contribute to severe fatigue, inhibited mental and cognitive function, altered mood, and even nausea, gastrointestinal distress, and hallucinations.
Building on this a little further, over time the accumulation of poor-quality sleep can induce inflammation, increase your risk of developing cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and cause degradations in cognitive function and mental health.
In short, sleep is super important.
Which is why we are always looking out for new and effective ways to help you sleep better – like the Blue Heron Insomnia Program.
How Does the Blue Heron Insomnia Program Work?
The blue heron insomnia program was developed by self-proclaimed natural health expert Christian Goodman, who also happens to be an insomnia sufferer himself.
The insomnia program utilizes an audio program to induce a somewhat hypnotic effect on the human body.
While this may sound a little bit farfetched, there is evidence to suggest that the combination certain hypnotic breathing techniques can induce a state of relaxation. These techniques downregulate the neural activity in the brain, reducing nervous system stimulus throughout the body.
In turn this induces a state of relaxation and tiredness, thus making it much easier to fall asleep [1, 2]. It essentially reverses the impact that daily life stress can have on the body and the nervous system, which tend to cause a heightened sense of alertness.
This unique program consists of two distinct parts:
The first part is comprised of a 25-minute audio track, which shows you the steps that you need to take to enter a state of deep sleep. The second part is a 50-minute audio track comprised of relaxing sounds.
These have been designed specifically to interact with the brain, increasing relaxation and helping draw you into a deep sleep state.
The Blue Heron group provides reference to some key scientific studies demonstrating the effectiveness of this protocol. Within these studies, it was shown to speed up the rate at which you fall asleep, induce a longer more restful sleep, and even cause lasting improvements in the sleep quality of long-suffering insomnia patients [3, 4].
Is the Insomnia Program Easy to Use?
I can really keep this section short and sweet – yes, the program is incredibly easy to use.
There’s no annoying manual that you need to read about the author’s story, no testimonials, or no other shameless product plugs – in fact, all you are given is a single audio file that provides the two parts mentioned above.
After paying, you simply download the audio file any device of your choice, hop straight into bed, and follow the simple instructions.
In my mind, the fact that this doesn’t require an audio CD or anything of that nature is extremely positive. It makes it easily accessible, where it can be taken with you anywhere, and obviously put onto any device that you want.
Simple and convenient.
I should note that this program is a great option for those looking to introduce these types of techniques into their sleep routine, but don’t really know where to start, as it lays it all out in a simple step by step manner.
Who is the Insomnia Program for?
While there is some evidence to suggest that this program can cause lasting improvements in sleep quality, I would argue that it offers the most benefit for those individuals who really have a hard time falling asleep.
If you find yourself staring at the ceiling for hours on end, random thoughts racing across your mind at a million miles per hour, then I this is a great option for you.
This program will help you enter a state of mental relaxation, distract you from those thoughts, and ultimately help you fall asleep faster – which is going to offer a myriad of powerful and positive health benefits.
Who Should not use the Insomnia Program?
There really aren’t any negative health effects associated with this program – however I would argue that it is not going to be suitable for those individuals who need complete silence to fall asleep. In this scenario, you may even find that instructions and associated noises somewhat annoying, essentially making it more challenging to fall asleep!
Is the Insomnia Program Effective?
Now for the test of truth – did the insomnia program work for me?
In short, yes.
After downloading the audio file, I uploaded it to my phone. I then hopped into bed at my normal bed time (around 10.30pm, for those interested), smacked in some headphones, and clicked play.
I’ll be honest – I was actually very skeptical.
While I have had very positive experiences with breathing techniques and white noise machines in the past, I have never tried anything that was suggested to induce a hypnotic effect.
But I have to admit, I was presently surprised.
I listened to the instructions, followed the process, and was probably asleep within 30 minutes. While this is not super quick for some people, I had a really busy day – the likes of which normally take me about an hour to wind down and physically fall asleep.
It really did seem to speed up that process.
However, I should note that I do tend to get similar results if I practice deep breathing techniques in conjunction with meditation before bed (obviously without the application of an audio tape) – so I can’t really say if its more effective than some other free methods.
Conclusion
The insomnia program utilities several key techniques to enhance your ability to fall asleep, thus ensuring a deeper, more rejuvenating sleep in the process. It has research to support its claims, and really did work for me.
While it may not be better than some other mediation techniques, it is easier to implement as it does not require you to learn how to do anything new – simply chuck in your headphones and listen to the instructions.
So, for those of you who have trouble falling asleep on a regular basis, give it a try and let us know how to goes – because we would love to hear about it!
