Buying a mattress is one of those purchases that feels overwhelming. There are hundreds of brands, dozens of materials, and prices ranging from $200 to $5,000+. Where do you even start?
Online vs. In-Store
The mattress industry has been completely disrupted by online brands. Companies like Casper, Purple, and Saatva proved that you don't need to lie on a mattress in a showroom to find a good one.
Online advantages: Better prices (no showroom overhead), longer trial periods (usually 100+ nights), free delivery and returns, and transparent reviews.
In-store advantages: You can try before you buy, negotiate prices, get same-day delivery, and get personalized recommendations from staff.
What to Look For
Regardless of where you buy, focus on these factors:
Support: Your mattress should keep your spine aligned. Side sleepers need softer surfaces for shoulder/hip pressure relief. Back sleepers need medium firmness. Stomach sleepers need firmer support.
Materials: Memory foam, latex, innerspring, and hybrid each have tradeoffs. Memory foam is great for pressure relief but can sleep hot. Latex is durable and naturally cooling. Innerspring provides bounce and airflow. Hybrids aim for the best of both worlds.
Trial period: Look for at least 100 nights. Your body needs 30+ days to adjust to a new mattress.
